GF Sandwich Bread: Honest Review Time

I, like you, loovveeee a good homemade bread. Ah, fresh out of the oven, lathered in butter. One of life’s simple pleasures. And while I have made a few decent gluten free breads over the years – perfect for pairing with a hearty dinner – , one thing I cannot seem to find is a homemade bread that is both gluten free and sandwich-friendly.

If your house is anything like mine, sandwiches are a staple. Whether it’s for chicken salad, egg salad, freshly-sliced deli ham sandwich from the local farm, or a simple home-maker style PB&J – I just didn’t feel like I could label myself a true *homesteader* until I could claim I make my own bread.
Any of you who aren’t able to eat gluten can absolutely relate to this conundrum. Most of the time my gluten free bread is excellent tasting, but it’s too light and fluffy to hold as a sandwich-style bread.

So I searched long and hard – and longer, and harder, for a recipe that claimed to have perfected this, with the caveat being it had to also be easy to make.

I narrowed it down to 2 recipe’s, and ultimately chose this one from Meaningful Eats because it seemed easier, and simpler, with less room for error. The other recipe in the running required measurements by “weight”, and honestly with a 1 and 3 year old, that just is an extra step in time I don’t have the luxury of.

So, what’s the verdict?

My 3 year old says I’m “awesome at making bread”, and I have now made 1 loaf of this a week for 3 weeks and keep coming back for more. It’s perfectly excellent with some butter and a hearty dinner as it is as a sandwich bread. But the real 5-stars comes from the fact that, YES, it does indeed hold up as sandwich bread. I can put all the fix’n on it and it does not collapse in my fingers.

I haven’t parsed out exactly what it costs me to make a loaf, but one thing I know for certain – it’s 100% cheaper than buying gluten free bread from the store.

I proof mine for 45 minutes in a warm oven, then bake it for 40 minutes. Bon appetite!

I used both the Namaste Gluten Free Organic Flour and the King Arthur 1:1 and both breads came out similarly!

Below is a picture of the excellent grilled cheese and ham. Drooling again just looking at this!
