Gluten Free Goldfish: Honest Recipe Review

Alright, so if you’re even moderately crunchy, you try to avoid all of the commercially packaged children’s snacks chocked full of glyphosate, GMOs, herbicides, and other chemicals, am-I-right?

I’ve recently seen various Reels and blog posts about how easy – and yummy – it is to make homemade goldfish, and considering my kids go crazy whenever someone outside of my immediate family buys them said-goldfish (and considering that I haven’t had a goldfish in over a decade due to my Celiac!), it was time to stop procrastinating and test it out with an organic, gluten-free version!

For this recipe, I followed halfbakedharvest’s recipe, found here (no affiliate).

I swapped the flour in this recipe for my go-to gluten-free, organic flour – which right now, is the Namaste brand (no affiliate).

Additional to the flour, this recipe called for sharp shredded cheddar cheese, paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, kosher salt, and a bunch of butter and some water. It also required a food processor.

I thought it would be a great idea to double the recipe so I’d have lots of snacks for hungry mouths all week, however it turned out to be too much for the food processor at one time, so I recommend sticking with a single batch.

I bought these cute little goldfish cutters to make the crackers into the correct fish-y shape. Once we made the “dough”, I rolled it out and let my 3-year-old make the goldfish.
As recommended, we baked for 15 minutes, which was absolutely perfect. With the gluten free flour, the fish appeared “dark” as if they were overcooked (picture below), but the taste was perfect – and they were not overcooked.

After the fun of making goldfish wore off and my daughter stuffed her face with the first batch, I took matters into my own hands to speed things up a bit (since my 1 year old was napping during this experiment), and decided to make cheez-its instead. The difference? We made squares rather than fishes! – Much quicker, same taste.

The best part is, my daughter loved these. The second best part, they truly didn’t take that long, and they really did taste absolutely delicious. It was a wonderful way to spend time with my 3-year-old, and everything was cleaned up by the time my 1-year-old awoke from her nap.

I will absolutely be making these in the future and referencing this recipe. Save it for later, guys and gals – you will be glad you did.
